My 21st Century Classroom

21st Century Classroom rendered with Photoshop
My 21st century classroom is a model of a high school science room. This sort of arrangement would be a good set set up for any of the common high school science courses such as chemistry, biology, and physics. For this classroom I chose a dark blue color for the walls of the room. Studies have shown that dark blue not only is a good color for the older students of high school, but also a good color across the board for the sciences. The dark blue promotes a more serious attitude and doesn't seem as immature as lighter bright colors. As far as the size of the classroom goes, it would be a fairly large one at 3,600 square feet. This would be roughly twice the size generally needed for the number of students in this classroom. This space is not wasted as the students will need the large space to take part in the many hands on actives that come with most science courses. Corresponding with number 1 in my rendering of my classroom is the teacher's desk/area. This desk feature microphones that can record and transmit the teacher's voice to speakers within the classroom. Directly above the teacher's circular desk is a jumbotron. This will be used by the teacher for whatever displays or presentations are needed for the class. At number 2 there is the student's seating arrangement. The desks are set up in a double horseshoe or semi-circle which allows the students a clear view of the teacher as well as a more collaborative atmosphere. The desks themselves have power sources that can be used to charge laptops and small speakers that help project the teacher's voice. They also have plenty of storage area which allows the students to keep all their materials, including book bags, clear of the floor and out of the way. For lectures the seating would remain much as it is seen here, however each desk has wheels which lets the arrangement change easily if need be. At number 3 there is simply and storage area for the class laptops. Moving to the other half of the classroom, at number 4, is the lab area. In this case there area roughly two students at each lap table. Each lab table has it's own sink and gas supply. Number 5 is where all the materials needed for lab activities are stored. This covers everything from goggles to microscopes to Bunsen burners. Finally at number 6 we have a general use sink and the very important chemical shower and eye wash station. Miscellaneous touches to the classroom include wifi and a video camera system. The video cameras can be used to not only record things such as lectures, but also send out a live stream that can be accessed by absent students or other professionals. Every class can be recorded and would be accessible both on a hard disc and cloud storage systems. The general set up of the classroom would be accessible to those with physical handicaps. The audio system would be of great help to those who have visual disabilities. A shared copy of the classroom notes would be available to every student so that they could have the information they need at hand.
This 21st century classroom will help foster my PLN in several ways.  By having a recording of each class, I would be able to share my techniques and results with fellow coworkers. I would be able to gain their insight about how to best work with certain students. I would also be able to share my experiences with professionals in other areas. For example, if I was trying to design an activity for a physics project I could share ideas with an engineer for feed back. I could even have that engineer speak to the class about how their activity relates to a real world example. By having all the of classroom activities, notes, and lectures online, the families of individuals would be able to witness everything going almost first hand. This would let them give me and their children very accurate feedback on any thoughts they have. To make it for the parents to find all of this I would create a classroom website that clearly organizes all the of recording and notes. Through all of these aspects I believe that my 21st century classroom would prove to be an effective one.
